Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. It gained home rule (1979) and expanded self-government (2009), which gave Nuuk control over most domestic matters and recognized Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

Denmark still handles defense, foreign affairs and currency, and Greenland depends on Danish subsidies and institutions. Full sovereignty would require political will, economic viability and likely a referendum.
